Marble Floor Treatment

  • Everyday Marble Floor Cleaning

Any time marble is cleaned, it should be done with a stone cleaner or mild  detergent . Cleansers containing acids or alkaline can mar the surface of the stone, removing particles of the marble in a process called etching. To restore the finish of an etched stone, it will need to be reground, so preventing etching is the best course.
Spills should be wiped up as soon as possible, and mats should be used to cover marble near entryways to protect it from sand or  salt tracked in from outside.

    Protecting Marble

    • To help impede staining of marble floors, it's important that the marble be sealed with an impregnating sealer. The sealer will enter the stone, filling up the thousands of tiny pores, and help to keep stains on the surface where they can be wiped away.
For tumbled marble floors, a second, topical sealer can also be applied to help enhance the color of the floor. Both types of sealer should be reapplied whenever water stops beading on the face of the stone.

       Stain Removal

      • If a stain occurs on a marble floor, it can be removed or at least minimized by the use of a poultice. A poultice is applied to the surface of the stone and covered with plastic to seal in the heat. The poultice will then penetrate the stone and lift the stain to the surface, where it can be washed away with a stone cleanser and water. Poultices can remove some of the sealer on the stone as well, so the stone should be resealed whenever a poultice is used.
